1. NightJohn was based in the 1800's because this story was about slavery. The misses was named Margaret, and her sisters name was Alaine. Sarny was "Mammy's" daughter, and Night John was the new worker that the "Old Waller" (the headmaster) bought for 1,000 dollars.. which was a lot to Sarny, considering that she didn't even know how much a penny was worth. Night John was described as a beautiful black man, that looked like marble stone against the "White House". They usually had a routine of eating 2 times a day, and they wouldn't get much to eat. One night in the quarters, Night John asked anybody if they had any chewing tobacco.. and in return he'd teach them how to read and write. So Sarny traded her tobacco to learn how to read, and the first letter was A for the first night. Sarny asked what his name was, and he replied John. Alice was a women and was a breeder, and she was whipped because she ran. Only two people have ran. The first was Jim, and he climbed a tree to try and get away from the dogs coming to get him, but they ripped apart from his toes to his waist, and died still hanging from the tree. The second guy was named Pawley, and every night he would sneak away to meet his girlfriend, and they'd look at the stars and sit out all night. But one night, he fell asleep and they went out looking for him and found him. For him not to run anymore, they cut his akilies and he bled to death.. silently. For some reason Alice lived when she was whipped and she ran. John also taught Sarny B and C.. and one night Mammy asked where he came from and he said he made it up North but came back to teach reading and writing.
2. Mascot was based in the 1930's/40's. The narrators name was Malcom, and Malcom had 2 brothers, Phibert who was a natural born boxer and his younger brother Reginald who was ashamed of Malcom for a period of time because Malcom tried to be like his brother and boxed a white boy named Bill Peterson and lost twice to him. In his school, he got expelled for putting a tack on the teachers chair.. and one day on the street a guy took him to court and they decided to send him to a reform school at the age of 13. Before he went there, he went to a detention home. Both the Swerlin's and the Lathrops loved him. In the story, he said that they talked to him like he was a "Mascot". He didn't mind them saying the word nigger in front of him or anything, and they meant no harm from it either way. They then decided to enroll him in a school called Mason Junior High School instead of going to the reform school. Mrs. Swerlin got Malcom a job at a restaurant washing dishes, and it just so happened to be this family who liked Malcom a lot, and who Malcom was close with. His favorite subjects in the 7th grade were English and History, even though he didn't like his History teacher. He strongly disliked Math though, because there was no room for discussion or opinion. He was really into Basketball. In the second semester of his 7th grade, he was elected class president which he was greatly proud of. He got elected because his grades were in the top three of the school and he was unique. Every Saturday, he would go back to Lansing to go visit his brothers and family.. but none of them ever spoke of their mother and father. Ella came down and convinced them all to go up to Kalamazoo to visit their mother, so they did. In the Summer of 1940 in Lansing, he went on the Greyhound bus to Boston to visit Ella. He absolutely loved it there, and when he returned home he didn't feel the same and everybody noticed his change in attitude. Once he returned, he entered the 8th grade. He desired to be a lawyer.. but his English teacher said he couldn't do it because he was black. Since the change of his attitude and how unhappy they saw Malcom, they decided to move him in with the Lyons family for the last 2 months of his 8th grade year, and when it was done.. he immediately moved to Boston to live with Ella sense she gained full custody of him.
3. The Great Debaters compares with the two stories in the way that they were all about Negroes and how they sort of struggled in old times. Malcom wanted to be a lawyer, and so did Samantha.. but the difference between them two is the Samantha really did become a lawyer, and I don't think Malcom did. The Great Debaters took place around the same time as Mascot did. The contrasts of these three stories are that NightJohn was based upon slavery, as the two other stories were after slavery had past. Malcom was more about how he went from being an average Negro man to becoming somebody who he loved and enjoyed, which sort of ties in with The Great Debaters but not at all of NightJohn. In all three stories though, each person wanted to become somebody who stood out and did things that nobody thought they could do at those times. For instance, in NightJohn, Sarny even though she knew what the punishment of knowing/learning how to read, she still wanted to. In Mascot, Malcom wanted to become a lawyer or at least somebody who wasn't like everyone else in Harlem.. So he tried and pursued that dream and moved to Boston where he had chances to become somebody and actually become happy. In The Great Debaters, Samantha wanted to become a lawyer and she later did and also wanted to be the first black women to be on the Debate Team, and James Farmer wanted to be a civil rights movement or something if I can remember, but he became known for doing things nobody thought he could do. All three stories contrast and compare with each other and these and many ways.

In class this week we watched 12 angry men. That's it. Oh and we took a test. There is never anything to talk about in these blogs anymore, i barely even remember to do them.. welllll its 5:35 and I've just been chillin' at my house doing nothing all day. I'm so boredddddddd. And there is absolutely nothing to talk about in this blog. I'll talk about that test, it was easy.. that's about it. 50 questions really shouldn't have been on that test because that play really wasn't that long but I mean whatever Mr. potter wants. Oh my gooooooosh I have nOTHING to talk about.. and all I wanna do right now is sleep. So uh sense I have a couple more minutes to type.. actually I have nothing to talk about. My blogs used to be so long and good but now we barely do anything in class that I can talk about so they're alll short because I pause so much. Like this blog is almost done now because I've been pausing because I have nothing to say. Maybe next week for this blog I'll have something to talk about. The only thing though that I'm gonna say before I'm done with this is that I was supposed to go up to my lakehouse and eat some thanksgiving dinner wiff my daddy and chris and steph and my brother and his girlfriend but by bruder is out of town with his girl so we couldn't and I was so upset.. Well this blog is done so bye
